Today, distribution methods for independently produced music are readily available. This has increased its popularity tremendously. The prohibitive costs of renting a professional recording studio has necessitated the creation of home recording facilities. Recording in a home studio still requires professionalism, when it comes to preparation and readiness.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Communicate with the band, performers or producers to make sure that sufficient rehearsals have prepared the group for production. Verify that bugs are worked out and the desired sound is achieved.

  2. Step 2

Find out how many microphones are needed for both vocals and acoustic instruments. Set up each microphone in the correct position and test it. Have all microphones connected and turned on prior to the arrival of the performers.

  3. Step 3

Have all technical support up and running before the session starts. Log on all computers and open all programs. Be ready to go as soon as the musicians arrive.

  4. Step 4

Put everyone at ease as they arrive. Remember that tensions can run high, so make everyone comfortable and minimize stress by a display of professionalism and competency.

  5. Step 5

Include as part of the service refreshments for the performers. Provide bottled water, coffee, soft drinks, fruit and light snacks.

  6. Step 6

Work with the producers or musicians to get the best performance from each individual. Work patiently to keep nerves and egos in check through multiple takes.

  7. Step 7

Check all the final tracks to assure that everything is ready for pos-production. Continue the process to the final mix.
