Even if you don't have a regular yoga practice, the alternative nostril breathing yoga technique is so simple, it can be easily done anywhere and anytime. It is believed this yoga exercise, also called nadi sodhana, which means purification of channels, cleans and rejuvenates your energy. It also is said that alternative nostril breathing can relax the mind and produce optimum brain function.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Sit in a relaxed, comfortable position, such as the lotus or half lotus.

  2. Step 2

Place your left hand in the mudra, or position, of the index finger and thumb gently touching.

  3. Step 3

Enter the left hand in the mudra where the index and middle fingers are in toward your thumb.

  4. Step 4

Inhale through both nostrils, then take your right hand ring finger and close off your left nostril so there is no breath flowing as you exhale through that side of your nose for a count of eight.

  5. Step 5

Change to block off the right nostril with your right thumb and inhale through your left nostril for a count of four.

  6. Step 6

Repeat the process, inhaling through the left nostril for a count of eight and exhale through the right nostril for a count of four. This completes your round of alternate nostril breathing.

Tips & Warnings
