Proper maintenance of a piano requires it to be tuned regularly. Piano tuning equipment allows the piano owner to keep the piano tuned without needing the services of a professional when just one note goes sour. Over the lifetime of the piano, the initial expenditure can save a little money to help pay for less frequent maintenance by a professional tuner.

Things You'll Need:

  • Tuning hammer
  • Mutes
  1. Step 1

Familiarize yourself with the inner mechanism of the piano. There are 220 tuning pegs in the piano.

  2. Step 2

Buy the proper tuning hammers from a large music store. The tuning hammer resembles a wrench. The piano tuning equipment also requires what are called mutes, which soften the tone. The cost should be in the neighborhood of $40 to $60.

  3. Step 3

Use an electronic tuning device to get the correct note. If you have a very good ear, you can use a series of tuning forks to get the notes correct.

  4. Step 4

Adjust the pins and sharpen up the strings' tone. This simple process brings the piano into a very good overall tune.

  5. Step 5

Isolate any specific string which is out of tune. Pay close attention to these strings as your tuning session may only require adjusting a few strings and not the entire 88 strings.
