Sewing has evolved from the days of hand-stitched garments to multifunction automatic machines capable of creating a variety of stitches. Today you may select a simple machine that will perform basic sewing patterns or a technologically advance computerized machine. The sewing machine you choose will not be used to its fullest potential if you do not know the pattern component parts and their functions.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start with the head of the sewing machine. The term "head" is the actual machine and includes all of the mechanical parts that make it work, but the head does not include the cabinet or case.

  2. Step 2

Wind thread onto a bobbin using the bobbin winder mechanism found in the top part of the head. The bobbin will go into the bobbin case in the lower part of the machine after the thread winds on it.

  3. Step 3

Choose the kind of pressure foot you need according to the task you are performing. It takes a special foot to sew a zipper or a button hole. The pressure foot holds the material steady as the needle stitches.

  4. Step 4

Watch the feed dog put pressure under the material and move it forward or backward as the fabric passes under the needle.

  5. Step 5

Use the spool pin on top of the machine to support the thread. When you sew with two different threads at the same time, use two pins.

  6. Step 6

Adjust the tension on the upper spool of thread by changing the tension setting. The tension device is on the front of the machine on the left side between the upper thread guide and the needle.

  7. Step 7

Decorate your sewing with any number of stitch patterns depending on the capabilities of the parts of your machine. Find some machine's patterns by merely selecting a pattern setting and others by inserting a cartridge or disc. The elite machines will allow you to hook up to the computer to download patterns.

Tips & Warnings
  • Increase the tension for thin fabrics and decrease it for thicker material.
