How to Handle a Lovebird

Lovebirds are very social creatures. If you only own one lovebird, it is up to you to provide the social interaction that would have been provided by a mate. It's worth it because they are extremely affectionate and loyal to the people who care for them. The easiest way to develop a bond with your lovebird is to hold it regularly.

Instructions

1. Wash your hands. This helps prevent the risk of your bird transmitting a disease to you, and vice versa, while holding it.

2. Choose an area of your home that is free of distractions such as noise from the television, bright furniture or your child's toys. Close all doors, including closets, so your bird doesn't wind up in another room.

3. Take the lovebird out of its cage carefully. If it resists, try again the next day.

4. Try to get the lovebird to step onto a dowel. Push the dowel against the bird's chest gently and offer it a treat if it complies. When your bird becomes comfortable doing this, try substituting your finger for the dowel.

Tips & Warnings

• Hand-raised baby lovebirds make the best pets; they are able to learn tricks quickly and shower their owners with love. Adult lovebirds that hadn't been hand-raised require a lot of patience and care on the part of the owner, since they won't learn as many tricks or imitate behaviors as readily as their younger counterparts.

• Hold your lovebird no longer than 15 minutes three to five times a day. When you're not holding the bird and it is in its cage, talk to it in a low, calm voice.

• Do not raise your voice or appear angry while trying to tame your lovebird; you must gain its trust. Keep your voice low and make slow movements.
