How to Do Lost Wax Casting
Lost wax casting is typically used to create small pieces of jewelry. In lost wax casting, carved wax is used to create a mold that is then used to shape molten metal. The finished cast of the metal will have the same shape as the carved wax.
Things You'll Need
- Sprue
- Carved wax
- Base
- Wax pen
- Flask
- Investment
- Kiln
- Centrifugal casting machine
- Molten metal
- Water
- Small brush
Instructions
-
Prepare the Mold
-
1
Attach the sprue to the carved wax and then to the base using a wax pen.
-
2
Join the flask to the base.
-
-
3
Pour the prepared investment into the flask. Use enough to fill the entire flask.
-
4
Allow the flask to set overnight or until the investment is completely hardened.
-
5
Remove the base.
-
6
Heat the flask slowly in a kiln to 1200 degrees F. The heating method you use may vary, depending on the type of metal you are casting.
-
7
Remove the flask after the wax is completely dissipated.
Cast the Metal

8
Place the flask into the centrifugal casting machine or vacuum table.
-
9
Force the molten metal into the mold using the centrifugal casting machine or vacuum table. Follow the instructions provided with your device.
