Select a massage therapist with experience with lymphedema. An experienced therapist is trained to direct fluid with lymphedema. Traditional massage therapy may be contraindicated with lymphedema.

Learn the art of self-massage to treat and prevent lymphedema. Regular self massage can keep lymphedema under control. Ask an experienced massage therapist to teach you how to apply self massage.

Keep a light touch with massage for lymphedema. Strong or forceful massage can make the condition worse or create a skin condition as a result.

Use Manual Lymphatic Drainage as a form of massage that moves fluid throughout the body. Seek a massage therapist knowledgeable in this method. Be aware that physicians may be divided about the benefits of this massage.

Monitor results from the massage and note if there is improvement or decline after massage therapy.

Change massage therapists or massage techniques when decline or discomfort results.
