Instructions
  1. Step 1

Listen to different styles of music. Notice the difference in techniques and instruments. Choose three to four styles you want to focus on. For example, a rock drummer may combine jazz, rock, funk and soul into his music. A country drummer may mix country, rock, pop and soul.

  2. Step 2

Find music in the style you want to play. Listen to the music and practice with sheet music for the different styles.

  3. Step 3

Pick a song you want to mix styles into.

  4. Step 4

Evaluate the song you are playing. Some songs are suitable for different styles. Be aware of what styles sound good together. Ask others for their opinion of the sounds you create.

  5. Step 5

Play the song with the style as it is written. Listen for areas or phrases to enhance with another style.

  6. Step 6

Add in the various styles. Experimentation is key. Play with all the different styles to find one that fits a certain part of the song. Do not be discouraged if you can't find a style to mix in. Some songs sound great with just one style played throughout the song.
