Regardless of a player's position on the field, it's important that he knows how to dodge other players to avoid injury or penalties. Dodging defenders also leads to the all-important possibility of scoring a goal. Here are some tips on two common men's lacrosse dodges—the roll dodge and the split dodge.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Complete a roll dodge. The purpose of the roll dodge is to gain attacking space directly behind your defender. Move with speed toward the defender. Hold the lacrosse stick parallel to your body with both hands so that you can pass or shoot should the opportunity arise. Keep the stick close to your body with the head of the stick next to your head. Your elbows should be up and perpendicular to your body to help keep the stick parallel. Avoid pressing the stick against your body as this is a penalty and results in a loss of possession.

  2. Step 2

Step across the defender when you are directly in front of him, then pivot back in the opposite direction away from him. As you do this, switch hand positions on the stick. The hand that was near the head is now at the bottom of the stick and vice versa. Continue to run past the defender.

  3. Step 3

Attempt a split dodge. This maneuver is similar to the roll dodge except that it does not involve a pivot turn. The idea is to make the defender think you are going to pass him on one side, but surprise! You pass him on the other.

  4. Step 4

Move speedily toward the defender while holding the stick parallel to your body with your dominant hand near the head of the stick. When you are directly in front of the defender, move to either side of him. You want the lacrosse stick to end up in the hand that is further away from the defender. If you are right-handed, approach the defender with your right hand at the top of the stick. If you cut to the left, switch your grip on the stick so your left hand is at the top. If you cut to the right, do not change your stick hold. Reverse these instructions if you are left-handed.
