An extremely important part of Chinese culture, martial arts such as kung fu have gained popularity around the world. Originating as a form of necessary protection and self-defense, kung fu is now taught as a fitness method, a competitive sport and a way of life. The basic kung fu front kick is one of the most important moves for beginning students to learn.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin preparation for the kung fu front kick by placing yourself into mountain climbing stance. Step your dominant foot back 1 to 2 feet behind you and lift yourself onto the ball of your foot. Bend your front knee slightly and turn your foot in. Lift your hands into defense position so that they are even with your centerline, your dominant hand just below the other.

  2. Step 2

Bring your left leg forward, bending your knee in high to your chest. Keep your foot flexed with your toes curled up. Snap your leg out hard and fast in front of your body, making impact with your target with the ball of your foot.

  3. Step 3

Draw your leg back in so that your knee is at chest position, and then relax it behind you, returning to mountain climbing stance. Make sure that you keep your back straight, your arms up and your supporting knee slightly bent throughout the entire kick.

  4. Step 4

Practice the kung fu front kick slowly and with both the left and right legs until you master each step of the move. Only when you have mastered the technique should be you begin to work on speed and strength.
