An integral part of Chinese culture, martial arts such as kung fu have spread across the world. Originally developed as a necessary means of self-defense and protection, kung fu is now taught as a competitive sport, a fitness method and a way of life. The kung fu cross stance is an essential technique for beginners to learn, as it helps to build strength and stability in the legs.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stand with you feet together in preparation to enter the kung fu cross stance. Your feet should be slightly apart while your fists are held into your waist with your knuckles facing up.

  2. Step 2

Push your left arm forward in a center punch, holding your right arm at your waist. In the same motion, cross your right leg over your left and drop down into the cross stance. The cross stance is a very low stance, so your knees should be deeply bent.

  3. Step 3

Turn your right foot as you are stepping over so that your toes face right and your heel points left. Lift up on your back toes, dropping your knee so that it is only inches from the ground. Keep your back straight throughout the stance.

  4. Step 4

Enter into the kung fu cross stance in a forward direction by crossing one leg over the other. Enter into the same stance in a backward direction by planting your feet, turning the hips and dropping your back knee under your front leg.

  5. Step 5

Practice holding the kung fu cross stance on both sides to build strength in the legs. Once mastered you can use this stance in combat or competition to throw low punches.
