A long-time tradition and integral part of Chinese culture, martial arts such as kung fu have gained popularity worldwide. While originally developed as a means of protection and self-defense, kung fu is now taught as a method of self-growth, as a competitive sport and as a fitness method. The kung fu center punch is a basic move that all students learn early on in practice.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Practice the kung fu center punch with a series of punches. While this is the best method to learn and perfect your skills, it may be applied singularly in combat or competition. The center punch can be practiced from a variety of stances, however it is most often taught to beginners from the mountain climbing stance.

  2. Step 2

Assume the mountain climbing stance. Stand with your fists knuckles up at your waist. Your legs should be about shoulder width apart with your dominant leg forward. Bend slightly at the knees and lift up onto the ball of your back foot.

  3. Step 3

Push your non-dominant arm out straight in front of you, rotating your knuckles face down as you push out. Upon full extension, your arm should be parallel to the ground with the fist even with the centerline of your body. Throughout the move, your shoulders should remain even and your back tall and straight.

  4. Step 4

Pull your arm back into your side to its original position as you punch forward with your dominant arm. Continue the kung fu center punch repeatedly in your practice, alternating arms. Once you have perfected the movements of the center punch, you can begin to practice strength by working with a punching bag.
