Step 1
Use the cat stance in kung fu as your basic transition stance, as it allows for quick mobility and response time. From the cat stance you can quickly kick, strike or block.
-
Step 2
Begin with your fisted hands at your waist with your elbows in tight to your body. Hold your dominant hand at your waist as you open the opposite hand and lift it up in front of you. In the same motion, step back about one foot with your dominant leg.
-
Step 3
Bend slightly at the knees, leaning onto your back leg and ready to strike at any moment. Your non-dominant hand should be lifted at about shoulder level and open in the grabbing position. That is, your thumb and forefingers should make a "V" shape with your thumb slightly bent and at a 90-degree angle to the floor.
-
Step 4
Rest all of your weight on your back leg with your foot angled out at 90 degrees. Your front foot should be pointed directly in front of you and lifted onto the toes. Always keep your gaze directly forward towards your opponent.
-
Step 5
Practice the kung fu cat stance to build strength in your legs and as a transition stance for other movements. While this stance is most often used with your dominant leg back, practicing on both sides will help you gain agility and versatility in your kung fu practice.
