How to Use a Jigsaw for Woodworking

If you need to cut complex shapes or curves--the jigsaw is your best bet. They are ideal on items like counter tops, just for that reason. They do a good job creating short crosscuts and corner cuts on a piece of wood. If you need to make long, fast, straight cuts go with a circular saw. Follow these steps to use a jigsaw for woodworking.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Know that jigsaws work best on softwoods that are no thicker than 1 1/2 inches and hardwoods that no thicker than 3/4 inch.

  2. Step 2

Mark on the designated wood where you want to cut. Remember that the jigsaw is much better doing curves than it is making straight lines.

  3. Step 3

Tip the jigsaw so that the blade is lying parallel to the wood.

  4. Step 4

Place the metal guard on the saw, also known as the shoe, so that it is flush against the wood.

  5. Step 5

Turn the saw onto its maximum speed with the blade slightly away from the wood. Once it comes to full speed, plunge the blade into the wood. This is called a plunge cut.

  6. Step 6

Follow the line you made on the wood. Keep your eye on the blade at all times.

  7. Step 7

Allow the saw to cut the wood itself. Don't push the saw with too much force or create pressure on the blade.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take off all loose jewelry.
  • Wear tighter fitting clothing so it doesn't get caught in the blade.
  • Read the instruction manual before using a jig saw.
  • Work in a well-lit area so that you can safely see what you are about to cut.
  • Keep children away from power tools.
  • Wear safety goggles when operating power tools.
  • Make sure that the power cord if clear of the blade at all times.
