How to Have Proper Stance in Jeet Kune Do

The proper stance in jeet kune do is a basic on-guard position (bai jong). While many other martial arts have a variety of stances, the philosophy of jeet kune do is that this stance in its simplicity works best. You are able to punch, kick or grapple without telegraphing your moves--and you are free to apply any technique you choose.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Put your most powerful side up front. In this way, your strongest weapons for defense or offense are closest to your opponent.

  2. Step 2

Place your opposite leg (the side you deem less powerful) and arm behind the lead side. You have to determine how much space to put between your feet. Go with what feels right.

  3. Step 3

Turn your torso and hips slightly toward the back leg and arm. You don't assume a full-frontal position in jeet kune do.

  4. Step 4

Place your hands up to guard, counter or strike as the situation demands. The position of your hands in terms of height is something each individual must determine. Part of the jeet kune do philosophy is that you develop your own proper stance.

  5. Step 5

Keep your knees bent slightly; never lock them.

  6. Step 6

    Engage your abs.

  7. Step 7

Keep your head up, always watching your opponent in a jeet kune do ready stance.
