Fret hand techniques are most widely used in rock guitar and produce a variety of unique sounds. Using the hand to move up and down the fret between notes, stop the sound or hammer the sound are sounds unique to fret hand styles.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin with the slide. Place your finger on the fourth string fifth fret and play the note. When the note sounds, slide your finger from the fifth to the seventh.

  2. Step 2

Use the same string to do a hammer technique. Play the note again and tap it as soon as it sounds. This makes the sound stop and start and sounds almost like a hammer.

  3. Step 3

Try the bend technique by placing your middle finger on the third string sixth fret. Put your fourth finger on the seventh fret for support. A full bend should sound in unison with the string directly underneath it.

  4. Step 4

Learn fret hand muting by letting your fret fingers touch the desired string lightly. Touch it enough to soften the sound without completely pushing down while playing the strings normally.

  5. Step 5

Attempt palm muting whenever you want to create a heavy or chunky sound. Do this by keeping your picking hand pressed against the strings while you play. The closer you place your hand to the bridge the easier it is to mute.

  6. Step 6

Use vibrato when you want the strings to give you a sense of fast movement or vibration. Use at least 3 fingers for support when beginning this technique. Simply wiggle the fingers back and forth as you press down on the string and play.
