Hanging pictures may sound like an easy thing to do, but we all know how difficult it can be. Trying to group various sizes of wall hangings in such a way that they look natural and add to the room's decor is even more of a challenge. Below are a few tips to keep in mind to make the whole process a little easier.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Create an asymmetrical and balanced scheme by determining ahead of time what pictures you'd like to hang and how much space you have available to hang them in.

  2. Step 2

Cut various pieces of paper to match the sizes of the artwork, if you're unsure of how the sizes of your wall hangings will look as a group and don't want to risk creating more nail holes in your wall than you need to. Then use a little tape to position each piece on the wall.

  3. Step 3

Give your wall hangings breathing room so they don't look crowded. Pictures should not be placed closer than 3 inches. That said, too much space isn't good either. Try not to space artwork more than 8 inches apart.

  4. Step 4

Hang the largest piece first. Eye the position of each subsequent piece by holding it against the wall.

  5. Step 5

Mark the position on the wall with a pencil so you remember it. To figure out how low a picture with a wire will sit, use your thumb and finger to roughly measure the distance between the top of the frame and the middle of the wire when it's pulled up.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you have several different looking pictures in various sizes, a good way to create unity when you hang them up is to make sure they all have the same color schemes or similar looking frames.
