Once you are comfortable ice skating, you can try some fancy moves like swizzles. Swizzles combine leg lifting with forward stroking as you move across the ice. Follow these tips to do forward swizzles in ice skating and soon you'll be figure skating across the ice.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stand with your legs together and your knees bent. Make a V formation with your feet so your back blades come together and your front blades point outward.

  2. Step 2

Push forward while making a half-circle motion with each foot simultaneously so that your feet come together in a full circle motion.

  3. Step 3

Let your feet meet together again, place them in formation and then push with both feet again to form a circle as you bend your knees. Bring your feet together again.

  4. Step 4

Repeat the circular motions over and over until you are moving across the ice making circles or figure eights. Keep your head up so you are looking ahead and not down at your feet.

  5. Step 5

Try to keep your legs even and pay particular attention to your weaker foot. Make sure your knees are bent each time you push off so you have the strength to move forward.

  6. Step 6

Speed up when you feel more confident but keep your knees slightly bent and your body forward so you don't lose your balance.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try not to push off with one foot more than the other when you are making circles or you will start to turn instead of going straight.
  • Wear a helmet when trying new moves on the ice.
