When you first learn to skate, you will want to try some easy moves like skating strokes. The stroke is the basic forward movement used to skate across the ice. Follow these tips to do forward strokes in ice skating.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stand with your feet together and make sure you have your balance before you begin. Hold out both your arms to steady yourself but keep your back straight and your head up.

  2. Step 2

Bend your knees slightly almost as if you were going to sit down. Make sure you still keep your balance because you are going to start moving across the ice.

  3. Step 3

Form a v-shape with your feet. Push off with the right foot and lift it into the air extending it out behind you. Glide your left foot forward as your right leg moves up. You are actually pushing yourself forward across the ice.

  4. Step 4

Let your foot return to the ice slowly so that your feet come together once again. Push off with your left foot and lift it into the air extending it out behind you. Glide your right foot forward as your left leg moves into the air behind you. Keep your balance as you move.

  5. Step 5

Lower your leg back to the ice. Make sure you keep your balance as your feet come together. Repeat again alternating each leg as you do forward strokes across the ice.

  6. Step 6

Speed up once you get more practice but keep your arms out so you don't lose your balance.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice skating more on your weaker leg with your stronger leg in the air.
  • Make sure your skates are sharp.
  • Always wear a helmet when skating.
