Setting up the bass drum is relatively easy. It is the biggest drum in a drum kit setup and is played with a kick pedal. The bass drum is one of the most important drums in a kit because it keeps the pulse of the song.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Position the bass drum so it is lying on its side. You will notice legs, also known as spurs, on either side of the drum. Those legs are used to hold the bass kick drum into position.

  2. Step 2

Extend the legs in a manner in which the bass drum's weight is centered on each leg. The legs can be extended to accomplish a perfect balance. Having the bass drum in position is one of the first steps in drum kit setup.

  3. Step 3

Prevent slipping by utilizing the rubber ends on the legs. If you're setting up the drum on carpet, then use the spikes which can be extended out of the legs. The spikes will allow the drum to play without fear of the bass kick drum sliding away. On hardwood surfaces it is best to use a rubber mat to prevent sliding.

  4. Step 4

Add the kick pedal. The bass drum has a slot in the bottom part of the rim for the pedal to be attached. Simply slide the pedal onto that slot and tighten the fastener on the bass kick pedal. This completes the setup of the bass drum. Now you can continue with the rest of the drum kit set up.

Tips & Warnings
  • Prior to setting up the bass drum, place a pillow in it to help muffle some of the sound.
  • Some drummers add sand bags in the drum and around the legs to help prevent slipping.
