How to Use Heel-Toeing When Driving a Manual Transmission

Use the heel-and-toe downshift technique to have better control while driving your car with manual transmission. Race car drivers use this technique in turns to make faster laps. Brake and downshift at the same time, especially while taking corners or making turns to keep the engine's speed matching the wheel speed. Basically, you'll be using both of your feet and all 3 pedals.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use your right foot to start braking when you come to a turn. Twist your foot to the right just a little on the pedal. You'll have to get a feel for exactly how to place your foot, depending on how close the pedals are to each other and how big your foot is.

  2. Step 2

Apply the clutch with your left foot as you would regularly.

  3. Step 3

Keep your right foot on the brake, but now you are also going to use that foot to press down on the throttle or gas as well. Roll the outside edge of the right foot down and out to hit the throttle. You're going to tap it in what is called "blips" or "blipping the throttle." Basically, you're tapping the gas to raise the rpms up to the wheel speed while at the same time braking.

  4. Step 4

Shift into the next gear while blipping. Lift your left foot to release the clutch. Stab the brakes; barely easing off the throttle has redistributed the car's weight from the back to the front tires so they can take the turns easier. If you just braked, the engine revs will fall.
