Step 1
Understand the difference between the old-school turntables and the new digital turntables. The old-school turntables were the first turntables used to create the art of scratching and other techniques. The old style used vinyl and a needle. The digital turntables offer more mixing options and don't have the needle to contend with.
-
Step 2
Use the vinyl turntable with the needle for a challenge like disc jockeys had during the early days of scratching. The needle must be down for the vinyl record to play; however, it must be up to scratch-otherwise, it will tear off when you scratch. Put the needle at a 90-degree angle to scratch.

Step 3
Try a digital turntable to change direction. Pick one side of the turntable and make sure your controls are all geared toward the side you are using. Slowly change directions, then change directions back. Listen for the difference in the music, and do this a few more times to get the hang of it.

Step 4
Network with other disc jockeys to learn more scratching techniques and how to change direction on the turntables in a smooth fashion. Practice is the most important thing when learning to DJ and use the turntables.
