Step 1
Take your time choosing a record for scratching. It's worth doing a little digging or listening before you make your choice. Look for something that will allow you a lot of variety.
-
Step 2
Find tracks on the record that will be good for scratching. Look for tracks with good drum bits and rhythms—something that you can play over and over and create something new as you scratch.
-
Step 3
Mark the record so you know exactly where the track you want to use is located. A nice, round, colorful sticker works well, because it's very easy to see.
-
Step 4
Look at many slipmats before choosing the one you like. Many companies make them.
-
Step 5
Make sure you get a slippery mat that goes between the turntable itself and the slipmat. This will mostly be made of clear plastic, but it can vary with each company. Test it out to make sure it slips well and works well with the slipmat. You don't want to have your slipmat sticking to the turntable as you're trying to do some serious scratching while DJing.
