Learning the basic techniques on turntables is essential to becoming a professional disc jockey. One of those basic techniques is how to create flare. This basically means creating your own style when working the turntables. This will give you a better reputation as a DJ and get you further in the industry.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Understand what the flare scratch is. The flare is used to switch between sides using the fader to change the volume, instead of using the volume control. This is a great basic technique used to control the track in different ways, making the sound cleaner and smoother.

  2. Step 2

Start a track on one of the sides, and make sure the controls are set up for the side you are using. Let the track run for a minute, and get in tune with the beat. Use the cross fader to play with the volume on the track. You should be able to take it to just about halfway before the volume goes out completely.

  3. Step 3

Practice this move forward and backward to get used to the sound difference. Use the volume control to hear the difference between using either control to change the volume. Once you have this technique down, you can expand to other techniques.

  4. Step 4

Work the flare technique in with some of the other disc-jockey techniques you have learned to see how it can be used. Practice a series of techniques to make the sounds and beats more complex and prove yourself to be a DJ worth hearing and dancing to.
