When decorating your wall with art, you may want to accent the artwork. If your wall is large and the art is smaller, you end up with negative space on either side of the art. You can use sconces to accent this art. Sconces may be simple candle holders or fully wired electric light fixtures.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stand back and look at the wall with the art already hanging on it. If the art is square or rectangular, consider using sconces that have rounded edges or are shaped in an oval pattern. Pull out a color from the art and match the sconces with that color for added accent.

  2. Step 2

Hold the sconces up against the art to visualize where they would look best. Move the scones closer to the art, then further away. Move the sconces higher, then lower to find the best location to accent the art.

  3. Step 3

Mark the wall by holding the sconce in place, then place a pencil mark at the very top of the sconce. Make sure that you have placed the sconce not only at the right height but also the right width away from the art. Mark both sides where the sconces will go.

  4. Step 4

Measure from the top of the sconce to the top of the hanger on the sconce. Go back to the wall and measure from your previously applied mark down to the hanger height. Do this for both sconces.

  5. Step 5

Use the correct type of nail or wall hanger recommended for the type of sconce you bought. Follow directions so the sconce will be secure in the wall. If you are attaching the sconces into drywall, it's suggested you use special nails or molly screws to secure the sconces.
