Step 1
Learn the basic mambo steps and practice them. This should include the two basic steps: the forward step and backward step. The basic step is done on a four-count beat, stepping on the second count with quick-quick-slow. This applies to forward and backward steps.
-
Step 2
Practice the basic turns of the mambo, including open turns and inside turns. Open turns refer to turns you complete in sync with your partner. This is off the basic mambo step. Step with your left foot in a quarter-turn, continue the turn facing back, then do the turn again on the right foot this time. This should look and feel like a figure 8. Practice it a few times to get the smoothness down.
-
Step 3
Put together the basic steps with the turn you are most comfortable with. Try it a few times until you are comfortable with the move. Slowly add more turns and different steps onto the basic steps as you learn them. Remember to keep the timing right.
-
Step 4
Put some basic steps between each turn or combination of turns.
-
Step 5
Show off your new moves at a Latin dance club or in a Latin dance class. The class will allow you to learn more about technique, while the club will allow you to see other dancers in their authentic environment, giving you more of a feel for the dance.
