Men need their hair cut more often than women because their hair is shorter. If they go too long between cuts, their hair can look scraggly and unkempt. A good rule of thumb is to schedule haircuts every 4 to 6 weeks for short styles and 8 to 10 weeks for longer ones.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Make sure the hair is damp. If it's dried, spray the hair with a water spray bottle. Comb the sides of the man's hair down.

  2. Step 2

Select a small section of hair toward the back of the head--the area you've already cut. Run the head of your comb down the length of the hair to separate a section.

  3. Step 3

Comb the section of hair out from the head. Make sure you're holding it between your pointer and middle fingers. Keep the hair at an angle. Comb it from the back piece, which is already short.

  4. Step 4

Use the shorter piece from the back as a guide as you trim the hair on the sides of the head.

  5. Step 5

Keep your scissors parallel to the head, not perpendicular. This ensures that you're cutting at an angle. You want the bottom pieces to be shorter than the top pieces of hair.

  6. Step 6

Move on to the next section of hair, closer to the man's temples. Use the same technique to hold the section of hair, keeping your fingers at an angle.

  7. Step 7

Trim all the hair on the sides of the man's head, using the shorter pieces as your guide. Check over your work when you're done, comparing each side to make sure they're even.
