Color-matching foundation makeup should be at the top of every makeup wearer's priority list. Taking steps to color-match foundation ensures even blending and a natural finish. It also saves you the embarrassment of having "two-tone" skin--the result of incorrectly matching foundation colors against your skin.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Palette
  • Spatula
  • Foundations
  1. Step 1

Buy a small spatula and palette from an art supply store. You can find these items in the acrylic paints department.

  2. Step 2

Visit the makeup section of a department store without wearing any makeup. Ask salespeople for assistance in choosing liquid foundations. Request to have small dots of different foundations applied to your skin.

  3. Step 3

Go outside and check the foundations' finishes. The fluorescent lights of department stores may give you a false impression of the foundations' effectiveness. Purchase two or three shades of liquid foundation that closely match your skin tone under natural sunlight.

  4. Step 4

Cleanse and moisturize your face again when you get home or when you're ready to put on your makeup.

  5. Step 5

Dip the spatula into the foundations and set a bit of each on the palette. Use the spatula to blend all the foundation samples. Apply a bit of the blended mix onto your face with a finger, sponge or foundation brush.

  6. Step 6

Examine the results and determine if you need more or less of a specific foundation color. Experiment with the different foundation colors by blending different amounts of foundation together and applying them to your skin until you achieve the perfect color match.

  7. Step 7

Mix the right amounts of foundations together each time you need to apply makeup. You could also store a larger amount of blended foundation in a sealed glass container once you find the right amounts of each foundation color to mix. This may save you the hassle of mixing every time you put on makeup.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use the skin tone of your inner wrist to help you decide on shades to buy.
  • Choose a concealer color at least a half shade lighter than the color of your mixed foundation. A concealer lighter than your foundation blends better into the skin.
  • Avoid buying your makeup at drugstores. Department stores keep fresh makeup supplies on hand.
  • Be prepared to return to the store and buy a new set of foundations every summer and winter, since skin tone changes between the two seasons.
  • Don't attempt to pick foundations while your face already has makeup on it. If you try to choose foundations while made up, you'll be matching colors to your foundation and not your skin tone.
