Harmonicas create a unique sound using air that is suctioned or blown through tiny holes. Chromatic harmonicas use a special button to change the pitch of notes to create a different variation of traditional harmonica sounds. Learn to play chromatic harmonica basics.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Know that chromatic harmonicas are made with 10, 12 or 16 holes traditionally, although variations in holes are available. Each octave has 12 notes, and the button on chromatic harmonicas raises the pitch of the sharp and flat notes.

  2. Step 2

Hold the chromatic harmonica so that the holes are facing you, the slide button is oriented on the right and the numbers are on the top cover of the harmonica. Adjust how you cup the harmonica to alter the sounds that are produced.

  3. Step 3

Play a 12-hole chromatic scale in a C key. With the slide in, on note 1, blow C and inhale D; on note 2, blow E and inhale F; on note 3, blow G and inhale A; and on note 4, blow C and inhale B. Repeat this series through the next eight holes.

  4. Step 4

Continue the chromatic scale. With the slide out, on note 1, blow a C-sharp and inhale a D-sharp; on hole 2, blow an F and inhale an A-sharp; on hole 3, blow G-sharp and inhale an A-sharp; and on hole 4, blow a C-sharp and inhale a C. Repeat this series through the next eight holes, but blow a C-sharp and inhale a D on hole 12.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never apply industrial lubricants to your harmonica. If your chromatic harmonica requires lubrication, use a thin layer of paraffin wax, or lightly coat the piece in a colorless, wax-based lip balm.
  • A buzzing sound when you play the chromatic harmonica indicates probable valve damage. Take your instrument to a specialist to get it fixed properly.
