Decide if you should wear a one-piece or a bikini. For many years, pageant contestants had only one choice for competition swimsuits: the one-piece tank suit. In recent times, bikinis have become more popular in beauty pageant competitions. In fact, some pageant experts feel that if you choose a one-piece swimsuit for competition, you are attempting to hide a flaw or you lack self-confidence. Unless your pageant requests a one-piece suit, consider a two-piece swimsuit for this portion of the competition.

Step 2
Select a style that flatters and highlights the best aspects of your figure. However, if you need it, a good swimsuit can improve on figure flaws. Many competition suits have built-in padding for smaller busts, tummy control panels for a belly bulge and shirring and details that accentuate your positive features. Pay close attention to the cut of the suit at the legs. Higher-cut legs are elongating, but avoid extreme cuts that compromise modesty.

Choose a color that complements your skin tone and hair color. Avoid pale suits that blend in with your skin tone. Bright colors set off tanned skin beautifully, and dark colors slenderize your figure. Some contestants try to coordinate the color of their interview suit, evening gown and swimsuit to have a look of continuity that the judges might remember. Other contestants play it safe with interview and evening gown colors and choose a swimsuit with an edgy color. Either approach can work as long as the color you choose flatters you.

Step 4
Eliminate gaps and riding up. Nothing is more uncomfortable to wear or watch than a competition swimsuit that creeps up in the back. Prevent the bottoms from riding up with double-sided tape or spray adhesive. Having the rear of your suit secure also helps give you confidence in your turns while modeling your swimsuit.
