A chess opening with the king's and queen's bishops and pawns makes for a powerful approach to gaining control of the center of the chess board at the start of play. Establishing this position with your bishops increases your chances of playing with two strong bishops.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take a look at your chess board with all the pieces arranged properly.

  2. Step 2

Locate the queen and to her left, the queen's bishop and the queen's knight. Move the pawn in front of the queen's knight one square forward, making for a strong opening.

  3. Step 3

Move the queen's bishop three squares diagonally, taking an advantage point across the board that powers your position on the board.

  4. Step 4

Locate the king's bishop, and then the knight's pawn. Place the next pawn in front of the king's knight one square forward, which also makes for a stronger position on the board.

  5. Step 5

Take the king's bishop and move it three squares diagonally, taking yet another advantage point that powers your position on the board.

  6. Step 6

Notice how the bishops start the power in the center of the board for you. The knights guard the bishops.

  7. Step 7

Move the queen's and king's pawns, and then castle the king, which protects him, so you can use the queen's power on the board.

Tips & Warnings
  • The first moves in chess are called the "opening moves" or the "opening." A strong opening provides a better safeguard for the king, and more control of the center board proves greater mobility for the pieces.
