Things You'll Need:
- Flat iron
- Shampoo
- Conditioner
- Blow dryer
- Frizz-free product
- Heat protection product
- Hair clips
-
Step 1
Select a flat iron appropriate for your hair type and skill. Choose a 1- to 1 1/2-inch flat iron if you have short to medium hair (shoulder length or shorter). For thick, course or long hair, pick an iron with at least 2-inch plates. Also, consider the iron's size and weight for ease of handling.
-
Step 2
Wash and condition your hair with shampoo and conditioner enhanced with moisturizers. Apply a frizz-control product before blow-drying and a heat protection product before straightening the hair. These products protect your hair from heat and promote a longer-lasting hairstyle.
-
Step 3
Divide your hair into several large sections. Hold the sections with hair clips. Turn on the flat iron and set the temperature depending on your hair's health. Use a lower setting for chemically treated, fine or damaged hair and higher settings for coarse, thick hair.
-
Step 4
Separate small sections of hair from a larger section to straighten. Make sections no wider than the iron's heating plates and no thicker than half the plates' width. Begin at the hair roots and move the flat iron along the hair in a slow-moving motion. Move the iron using even pressure.
-
Step 5
Apply more heat to the roots and the least heat to the tips, but keep the iron moving at all times to prevent burning the hair. Continue applying the flat iron until you straighten all the hair.
