Changing out a car stereo is a project most people avoid undertaking, given the seemingly complex world of electronics. The truth is, there are only a couple of connections and a few screws to deal with, so the job is a fairly simple one. You can install your new car stereo in just a few minutes using the correct method.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Remove the retaining screws and pull out the old stereo. Unplug the antenna wire and the wiring harness by releasing the retaining clip. Use a screwdriver if necessary to lift up the retaining clip.
Step2
Locate the wiring harness coming out the back of the new stereo. Find the black antenna wire. Plug the antenna wire into the back of the stereo.
Step3
Connect the wiring harness. Make sure that it's turned around the correct way, although most are set to connect only one way. Listen for a "click" to know that the wiring harness is in place. Secure it with the retaining clip.
Step4
Push all the wires gently into the deck opening. Take care not to bend or damage any of the wires. Set the unit securely in place.
Step5
Install the hold-down screws to secure the stereo unit and deter theft. Use the hold-down screws from the previous unit if they fit well. Make sure the unit is in the right position before tightening the screws.
Step6
Replace the face plate for the new stereo unit. Line up the new face plate with the clips, and push it in until it clicks into place.
Step7
Turn on the radio. Test several settings and stations to make sure it is working properly. Check to make sure the face plate is secure and can be easily removed.
