In advanced taekwondo, it is essential to master some basic combinations to use while sparring and in competition. Combinations allow you to confuse your opponent and get a clean strike when it is most difficult. The steps below teach you how to do a combo of a jab to reverse punch to midair back kick, which you can use within medium range from your opponent.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start in a fighting stance. It can be a front stance or a walking stance. The significant aspect of your stance is in which leg is forward. The important part of this combo is the kick, so make sure your stance is set up for your kick. Your rear leg in this stance will be the one you eventually kick with.

  2. Step 2

Jab with your front hand. Your front hand should match your front leg. This jab draws a block from your opponent. Throw a high jab so that your opponent must bring his block up, which will open up his body.

  3. Step 3

Punch with your back hand. A punch that you throw from the side of the body with the back leg is a reverse punch. This punch also gets your opponent to react, to set up your kick, but if you have an opportunity to get in a clean punch, take it. Keep this punch high as well.

  4. Step 4

Jump away and spin. This combo is for when you are too close to your opponent to land a full kick, so to get a strong kick in, create a little distance between you and your opponent. Spin in the direction of your rear leg. Twist around and bring your front foot close to your rear foot, then jump as you spin.

  5. Step 5

Kick behind you. This must be a strong back kick. This kick is the goal of the whole combo, so make it count. If your opponent blocked the punches, his midsection should be open. When you are facing away from your opponent in the air, kick straight behind you at your opponent's midsection.

  6. Step 6

Land after your kick. Spin all the way back around, facing your opponent. End with your stance set up opposite to where you started, so that your kicking leg is now in front.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try out other variations of this combination. Do a strong back kick without jumping, or throw lower punches and kick at the head. Creativity is important in successful combinations.
