A hot stone massage is a type of massage therapy that uses special hot stones--usually made of basalt--to relax muscles and help the massage therapist perform a deeper massage. You can experience a hot stone massage on the entire body, but legs are a common request. Follow these steps to massage the legs during a hot stone massage.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Massage stones
  • Heating unit
  • Massage table
  • Massage oil
  • Towel
  1. Step 1

Purchase or gather flat, smooth stones to use for your hot stone massage. See the related eHow "How to Make a Hot Stone Massage Kit." Whether you buy a hot stone massage kit or collect the stones yourself, you will need about 50 stones to begin.

  2. Step 2

Heat the stones in a slow cooker or electric roasting pan set on the lowest setting. Place the stones in the bottom of these devices and cover them with water. You can also purchase a device for heating hot stones, but this is not necessary.

  3. Step 3

Have the client (the person receiving the massage) lie on her stomach with her legs exposed. A massage table is nice, but you can also have the person lie on the floor or on a bed.

  4. Step 4

Massage oil into the client's legs. You can purchase massage oil at most health food stores.

  5. Step 5

Remove the hot stones from the water and dry them off with a towel. If the stones are hot but cool enough for you to touch, they are the right temperature. Place the stones on the back of the thighs and the calves of both legs. The stones should be far enough apart so that you have enough room to massage that area of the leg.

  6. Step 6

Slide a stone up the muscles of the leg in small circles. Always massage in the direction of the body and avoid applying deep pressure at the back of the knees.

  7. Step 7

Replace the stones with some hot ones and repeat the process on the opposite leg.

  8. Step 8

Ask the client to roll onto his back, and repeat the process on this side--first using the massage oil and then massaging the thighs and shins of each leg.

Tips & Warnings
  • Determining how much pressure to use during a hot stone massage is difficult, since some people are more sensitive than others. Start out with light pressure and increase slowly. Tell the client that she should let you know when the pressure is too strong.
  • After you take the stones out of the water, remember to place a lid back on your heating device so that the remaining stones will be hot enough.
