Step 1
Notice the bar on the chainsaw. Some chainsaws do not have a sprocket on the bar. These are normally the cheaper saws. These bars only get lubricated when the saw is running and pumping oil from the oil reservoir out of the saw itself.
-
Step 2
Look at the bar of a chainsaw with the sprocket on the end. This sprocket helps with heat build-up as the chain moves around the end of the bar. So it is necessary to lubricate this sprocket in order to have optimal performance of the chainsaw.
-
Step 3
Lubricate your chainsaw sprocket on the end of your bar by looking for the small hole on the side of your bar. The grease gun made for a chainsaw is not like a normal grease gun. This gun has a point on the end and you actually push the end of the gun, forcing grease into the hole of the bar. This applies grease to the bearings of the sprocket.

Step 4
Find the sprocket on the chainsaw motor itself. This sprocket usually has wood-shavings built up around it. Clean the wood shavings away from the sprocket so that the lubricant can penetrate the sprocket and bar. This lubricant comes out of the oil reservoir on the motor. See that the lubricant hole is not stopped up with wood shavings so that when the saw is running, it will lubricate the sprocket and chain.
