Indulge the inner geek without the hardware. Instead, try some software in the form of tribbles, those furry, prolific creatures from the classic Star Trek episode "The Trouble with Tribbles." Grab a needle and thread to make a replica of these cute and cuddly Star Trek props. To quote Scotty, "They'll be no tribble at all."

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Fake fur
  • Cotton stuffing

Step1
Buy fake fur of any color at the local sewing store. The longer the fur, the better.
Step2
Cut two circles out of the fake fur. Be sure they're the same size, at least four inches across. Tribbles, of course, come in different sizes.
Step3
Face the two furry sides against each other.
Step4
Use any color of thread to sew the prop. Knot the thread well, and use a small stitch to sew the edges of the circles together.
Step5
Leave a small hole on one side of the circle. Turn your tribble's fur side out.
Step6
Stuff your Star Trek creature with cotton stuffing, not food. You know how quickly those tribbles reproduce when you feed them.
Step7
Sew the hole closed.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want your Star Trek prop to produce sound effects, ask the staff in the craft department about the devices that chirp (tribbles do this when annoyed by Klingons) or produce a humming or vibration (tribbles purr when happy). Put the device in the hole before you sew it closed, then squeeze your tribble to get a sound.
