Gay marriage is a hot topic and gay individuals are more prominent on television and in movies than ever before. Regardless of your personal views on the gay lifestyle, familiarizing yourself with gay rights defense helps you understand the opposition against the movement and reasons why others support it. The first step in defense of gay rights is education.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Start with respect, patience and open-mindedness toward views on gay rights. Defense is often associated with hostility and loss of temper. A good defense is a well thought-out argument that listens to another party and respects his or her right to an opinion. Keeping this attitude only adds to your credibility.
Step2
Argue that the fact that gay couples are unable to procreate and thus the union is unnatural has no merit because there are numerous heterosexual couples unable to conceive because either one or both partners are biologically sterile or made the medical decision to sterilize themselves. However it happened, having children does not legally justify a relationship.
Step3
Dissolve the myth that gay couples wanting to marry corrupt the institute of marriage. Tradition states that marriage is a union between a man and woman, but at one time tradition stated that African Americans weren't allowed to socialize with much less marry a white person. Tradition is simply the way things have always been done but it doesn't mean that it's the correct way.
Step4
Point out that a record number of children are growing up in dysfunctional households with a man and woman. Having two members of the opposite sex in a house does not ensure a healthy child, while plenty of well-rounded, healthy and normal children grow up in gay households and become contributing members to society.
Step5
Look to the scientific and case-study evidence. For each study that states people are born gay, there is another that shows that gay people can be rehabilitated to become heterosexual. Don't take the first study you come across as the final word. Dig deep and find studies that are credible and lasted for years.
