Because travel is so much easier today, and people travel or relocate for work or study, many of us will want to have intercultural and interracial relationships. One of the barriers is dating someone who does not speak your language. Here are some steps on how to date across a language barrier.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn about your date's culture, language and background before you start dating seriously. Search the Internet for your date's country of origin and language. The more you know and understand, the easier it will be to understand your date's actions and thoughts.

  2. Step 2

Practice some language skills. Make a list of words and phrases that you believe would be important on a date. Learn these words and phrases before you go on your date. Write them down in a small notebook and carry the notebook with you on the date.

  3. Step 3

Buy a dictionary or book of words and phrases to carry with you on your date. This will also help you communicate with your date.

  4. Step 4

Enjoy yourself and have fun. A language barrier cannot stop you from having fun or even possibly falling in love with your date. Remember, where there is a will, there is a way.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid telephone communication. With a language barrier, it is much easier to attempt to communicate face to face.
