Forums, social networking sites and chat rooms are all popular online hangouts, especially for teenagers. However, there are some things to remember when you are chatting online, especially if you are underage.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a screen name that isn't sexually suggestive or gives any hints about your real name. Don't share photos or videos of yourself.

  2. Step 2

Keep your personal information to yourself. Personal information includes your name, address, phone number, school name, sports team, social security number and your birthday. Don't download anything from anyone or any website.

  3. Step 3

Log off all websites when you are done. Delete your cookies, which store information about your Internet usage.

  4. Step 4

Report to your parents about anyone who acts strangely. Sexually suggestive, creepy or otherwise questionable comments are red flags. Block contact with anyone who sends these messages. Don't trust people you don't know. Just because a person says he is 14, doesn't mean he is telling you the truth. Refuse to meet with anyone that you have met online.

  5. Step 5

Be honest with your parents about everything that you do online. Let them guide you as to which online activities and behaviors are safe.
