How to Charge an 8-Volt Battery

Just because your tractor works on an 8-volt battery doesn't mean you have to scour the city to find a brand new one every few weeks. Instead, take the time to learn how to charge your battery to extend its use, and then buy a battery charger at your local tractor shop, farming implement store or online.

  • Make sure the 8-volt battery charger is in the off position before you use it. Plug the charger into any DC power source or wall outlet. Connect the charger to the battery with the alligator clips connected to the charging unit. Most 8-volt battery chargers also have a cigarette lighter adapter option for charging an 8-volt battery in your car. If you use this method, make sure you charge your battery with the car running.

  • Turn on the charger. Watch the indicator lights to make sure the device is functioning properly. Consult the instructions that came with your specific unit to understand what the indicator lights mean.

  • Run the charger until it switches into the floating charge mode, or until the charger output drops below 0.1 amp. It should take about 6 to 8 hours to charge your 8-volt battery.
