Changing a starter on a first generation Dodge Neon isn't a job for a beginner. However, with the right tools, equipment and some knowledge, you can do it without consulting a professional mechanic.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make sure the car's engine is cold. Do not attempt this repair on a car that's been running recently.

  2. Step 2

Remove the battery, battery terminals and the battery box. Loosen the bolts that hold the battery box in place. There should be 8 altogether. Not all of them have to come completely out, as the battery box has slots that slide around them.

  3. Step 3

Disconnect the radiator hose. Loosen the four fan bolts holding the fans in place. They are located along the top.

  4. Step 4

Pull the fans out and locate the 2 starter wires. One of them unclips. Remove the other with a socket wrench.

  5. Step 5

Find the 2 bolts that hold the starter in place and remove them.

  6. Step 6

Remove the old starter and replace with a new one. Reassemble all the parts you've removed in reverse order.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take your old starter into an auto parts store to test if it still works. This can save you from buying a new starter that you might not need.
  • Clean your battery terminals before replacing them. Make a paste of baking soda and water and scrub with a toothbrush. Pour white vinegar over the top to rinse.
