Tartarus, the final brute boss in Halo 2, is very strong and is protected by a nearly impenetrable forcefield. However, killing him may be easier than getting rid of the other Halo bosses. His range is limited, and you can wear him down if you keep your distance and rely on friends like Sarge.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Fly the Banshee into the control room. Bypass the brutes inside and use the Banshee against Tartarus. Squeeze up and over the destroyed door rubble once you're through the doorway.

  2. Step 2

Keep your distance from Tartarus, especially while his shield is up. Three hits from him should destroy you. If you stay in the Banshee, you can hover above him and he'll never get you.

  3. Step 3

Wait for Sarge to take out Tartarus' shield. The beam rifle, which Sarge uses, is the only thing that will weaken it.

  4. Step 4

Get your shots in while the shield is down. If you're in the Banshee, hit him with the fuel rod cannon. If you're on foot, dual brute plasma rifles work best because they won't run out of ammo.

  5. Step 5

Take out the brute reinforcements that will appear during the battle. They usually appear after your first hit, then twice more every two to three hits. Keep an eye on their platform to catch them in time

  6. Step 6

Repeat the process after the shield returns. Remain patient. Depending on your weapon, Tartarus should go down in 8 to 10 hits.

Tips & Warnings
  • Aid Sarge with your own beam rifle to take out Tartarus' shield. It will run out of ammo, however, and you'll lose time while switching weapons.
  • Save and quit at every checkpoint you pass before proceeding. There will be no checkpoints in the control room.
