Greasy, rancid cabinets can become a health threat if not properly cleaned. Even small amounts of rancid grease can effect your food's quality and make you ill. Keep your food edible and healthy by cleaning greasy cabinets with a degreaser.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Ventilate the area. Degreasers contains toxic fumes. Remove all doors, screws and hinges from the cabinets. Turn off and unplug all heating sources. Put on latex gloves, old clothes and something to protect your eyes.
Step2
Mix equal parts degreaser and water in a spray bottle. Give it a shake so that it mixes.
Step3
Spray the solution evenly and thoroughly on a greasy area far from general visibility. The top of your cabinet, the farthest part of your cabinet or in the interior part of doors can help you test the solution.
Step4
Use a sponge or an old, clean rag to spread the solution over the area. Allow the degreaser to soak into the area for a few minutes. Note the solution's effectiveness. If the solution doesn't seem to be affecting the area, simply coat the sponge or rag with a concentrated amount of degreaser and apply directly to the area.
Step5
Scrub the area of with the scrubber side of the sponge or a scrub brush. Loosen as much grease as you can and wipe it up and dispose of it as it comes off the cabinet. Reapply diluted or concentrated degreaser as you wipe loosened grease away.
Step6
Sponge the cabinets with clean water once you have removed all of the grease.
Step7
Apply concentrated degreaser to the hinges and screws. Wipe them down with a rag and water. You may also soak the hinges and screws in degreaser while you're working on the cabinets to save time.

Tips & Warnings

  • Clean all areas where the grease may have splattered, including those that don't seem to be affected but are in close proximity to areas that have grease.
  • Reassemble the cabinets only after all parts of the cabinet are clean and completely dry.
  • Steel wood pads should be avoided when cleaning. They may damage your cabinets.
  • If you have managed to scrub paint off of your cabinets and desire to repaint them after the cleaning, use TSP or Spic n' Span during their final washing.
  • Wood cabinets should not be treated with water or degreaser, as the liquid may penetrate the wood and cause you more cleaning problems.
  • Pour excess degreaser down your toilet and flush. Dispose of the used sponge or rags in an outside trash can.
