How to Change Window Skins With ShellWM

ShellWM is a Windows operating system skinning program. Windows skinning allows you to change the look and feel of your Windows interface. Once you have ShellWM installed on your computer, you can download the skins available to customize your Windows shell.

Instructions

      Download ShellWM from ScourgeForge. You must have a computer that runs at least Windows 95 on it.

      Unzip the files on your computer. Click on the program to install it. Follow every direction specified during installation.

      Visit Skinbase or another website that specializes in offering ShellWM skins. Download your preferred skin after browsing through them.

      Access your computer's program files by clicking the "Start" menu, "My Computer," "Local Disk" and "Program Files." Click on the ShellWM folder. Drag and drop your newly downloaded skin into the "Skins" folder located inside the ShellWM folder.

      Click "Refresh List."

      Change your ShellWM skin by picking the skin from the refreshed list.

      Press "Load Skin" to see your skin in action in the ShellWM program.

Tips & Warnings

  • The user interface for ShellWM is Win32 (MS Windows).

  • Some users may find that no "Skins" folder exists in the main ShellWM program folder. If this occurs, simply create a new folder in the main folder, name it "Skins" and drag the skin into it.

  • Click on the "Bugs" link on ScourgeForge's ShellWM download page to read about reported bugs with the program. One of these bugs may effect your ability to change window skins with ShellWM.
