How to Calibrate a Monitor

Computer monitors have evolved from large, cathode ray tube behemoths to flat screen energy-efficient models. These new LCD monitors often need calibration to operate at their best performance levels.

Instructions

1. Power on the monitor and locate its settings control panel. This panel is either at the rear, side or front of the unit. The panel consists of a set of buttons or dials.

2. Find the brightness and contrast options in this set of controls. Manipulate the controls until the brightness is at a comfortable level. Contrast options add or reduce the sharpness of characters and edges.

3. Purchase a commercial color calibrating software application, like Pantone's Huey monitor calibrator, to achieve optimal color results. Circuit City or Best Buy carries these software monitor calibrators or find them at online retailers.

4. Use the monitor's onboard diagnostic repair program. The monitor determines the need for calibration. Follow the onscreen instructions displayed on the monitor.

5. Inspect a graduating gray scale chart while the monitor is power on. Adjust the sliders or buttons on the control panel until all colors of the bar chart are in the best order.

Tips & Warnings

• Stand a few feet away from the monitor when calibrating for best results.

• Keep the contrast levels comfortable to prevent eyestrain.
