1. Purchase Mexican auto insurance to cover legal assistance and liability in the event of an accident. Mexican insurance can be purchased at any border town at a cost of $10 to $15 per day, with the daily rate decreasing for longer stays. American liability insurance will not be valid in Mexico.
2. Acquire an FMT tourist permit, (a Tourist/Business Visitors Visa,) which will enable you to be in Mexico legally for up to 180 days. FMT permits can be purchased at the border, airports, or at the Mexican Consulate. Without an FMT permit, your Mexican auto insurance may not be valid.
3. Stay sober while driving in Mexico. This is one of the most important things you can to do stay out of trouble while driving in Mexico. If you choose to drink, always appoint a designated driver. Mexican auto insurance won't be valid if you are in an accident if you are even slightly under the influence. If it is determined that you are at fault, you will go to jail.
4. Obey the posted speed limits and other traffic laws. Paying attention to the rules and driving with extra care is crucial if you want to drive in Mexico without getting into trouble. Follow the laws even if it looks like nobody else is paying attention to them.
5. Wear a helmet if you ride a motorcycle in Mexico, which has a strictly-enforced helmet law.
