How to Do a Rolling Front Flip

Performing a rolling front flip allows the body to experience flying without touching the ground. Many gymnasts consider the rolling front flip a simple floor exercise that you can learn with a little practice.

Instructions

    • 1

Master the standard forward roll before attempting a rolling front flip. You need a soft or padded area to flip onto in order to safely execute the flip.

    • 2

Find an area with lots of room to run as fast as physically possible that has a soft ground or mat to end with a rolling flip.

    • 3

Practice some forward rolls to help with overall balance and familiarity of rolling the body. Even though you know the forward roll, practicing that a few times helps in the execution of the more challenging flip.

    • 4

Run fast but keep safety in mind. Too fast and you could wind up on your bottom or back. The whole process takes a few tries before you know exactly the right speed to execute the perfect rolling front flip.

    • 5

Arrive at the point you picked to roll and flip in the air. Lean forward as if you're rolling on the ground, but jump up and lift your feet. Follow through with the intention that your body will roll completely around.

    • 6

Land with your feet on the ground and your hands stretched in front of you. The momentum of the flip causes the body to continue rolling. Placing the hands in front stops the momentum and protects you from landing on your face.

Tips & Warnings

  • Find someone to help you with your first few flips in case you miss the roll.

  • Try tucking your legs in as you flip over.

  • Avoid doing the flip on hard ground until you can execute the move perfectly.
