Pirouette means a "turn on one foot." A pirouette may be performed from one of several different stances with the working leg in different positions. The following steps explain an outside pirouette (the "en dehors" position) in "passe" (with the foot placed near or on the other knee) for the right leg.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Place your feet in first position. Stand with your feet in a "V" with your heels together and the feet turning outward. The legs should be straight with the knees touching.

  2. Step 2

Extend the right foot to the side until the entire leg is stretched, and the foot is fully extended. Place your arms in second position with each arm out to the side and the palms facing forward.

  3. Step 3

Carry your right leg back into the fourth position. The feet are parallel with one foot in front of the other, separated by the length of one foot. The heel of one foot is in line with the toe of the other.

  4. Step 4

Put your arms in third position. Place your left arm out to the side with the right arm rounded and raised above the head.

  5. Step 5

Make sure your body is straight up and down. Keep the left leg into the ground. Lift the right heel.

  6. Step 6

Lean forward, bending the left leg at the knee. Keep your right leg straight. Releve, or lift up, on the left leg and simultaneously place your right leg in the passe position on the left leg. In the passe position, the right foot is placed near or on the left knee.

  7. Step 7

Bring your arms immediately in front of you in a crossed position, as if you are holding a baby.

  8. Step 8

Focus on a point in front of you. Keep your eyes affixed to this spot. Pull your arms into first position, rounded in front of the hips. Turn two rotations to the right. Whip your head around during the turns, maintaining your gaze on the "spot."

  9. Step 9

Finish the right leg double pirouette in fourth position with your knees slightly bent.

Tips & Warnings
  • All movement be simultaneous to complete a successful pirouette.
  • Keep your arms tucked during the rotation. Don't whip them around to provide momentum, or you'll be thrown off balance.
  • Maintain the passe position from the beginning throughout the entire turn.
