Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Use a size 7 ball with a 29 1/2 to 30 inch circumference that weighs 20 to 22 oz. for men or boys 12 and older.
Step2
Buy a smaller ball for women and adolescent boys from 8- to 12-years old. The smaller ball is a WNBA size 6 ball. It weighs 18 to 20 oz. and has a circumference ranging from 28 1/2 to 29 inches. A size 5 ball is the recommended ball size for players 8 years old or younger. The circumference is about 27 inches and weighs 18 to 20 oz.
Step3
Consider giving preschool and young elementary children a mini-basketball that weighs no more than 8 to 12 oz. and has a 22-inch circumference. The mini-basketball is a good practice ball for any age because it helps build hand and eye coordination.
Step4
Test the ball before purchasing to see if you can handle it. You should be able to easily palm the ball, pass and shoot it without straining. If the ball is too difficult for you to perform basic ball handling drills, switch to a smaller ball.
Step5
Determine where you are most likely to play. For strictly outdoor play, choose a rubber ball for durability. If you play both indoors and out, use a synthetic leather ball. If you prefer indoor courts only, then choose a full-grain leather basketball.
